Sudan: member of communist party released

A member of Al-Zein’s family confirmed to Al-Tageer that the Military Intelligence released Amal and her husband today, Thursday, after she was arrested last Sunday evening

The Sudanese Military Intelligence in the city of Shendi in the Nile River State – in the north of the country – released the lawyer and member of the political bureau of the Sudanese Communist Party, Amal Al-Zein, and her husband, the lawyer Awad Abdel-Bain, after an arrest that lasted several days.

Since the outbreak of armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, 2023 in the capital, Khartoum, and other cities, the military intelligence has arrested a large number of partisans, activists, members of resistance committees and emergency committees, volunteers, and other actors, in many regions of the country: the northern states, the Nile River, Al-Jazira, Gedaref, and others. The authorities have also banned the activities of the committees, the resistance and Forces of Freedom and Change members.

A member of Al-Zein’s family confirmed to Al-Tageer that the Military Intelligence released Amal and her husband today, Thursday, after she was arrested last Sunday evening. Her husband, a lawyer and member of the Sudanese Communist Party, was also arrested later.

The Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) accused Military Intelligence in the city of Shendi of launching a massive arrest campaign that included political cadres, activists in the emergency and resistance committees, and volunteers in the field of charitable work.

The SCP noted that the detainee, Amal Al-Zein, suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure and takes regular medications. The resource confirmed that Military Intelligence refused any contact with her even though she is under the supervision of doctors.

Al-Zein, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure requiring regular medication, has prompted urgent appeals from the party’s spokesperson, Fathi Al-Fadl, for her immediate release. He stressed the need for her family and legal representatives to visit her and ensure she receives the necessary medical care.

Al-Fadl expressed deep concern over the military’s communication blackout concerning Al-Zein, holding them responsible for her safety and well-being.

The SCP held military intelligence and the de facto authority responsible for the safety and health of detainees and stressed the need to respect the dignity of detainees, treat them humanely, and provide medical treatment to patients.

Political forces condemned – more than once – the military intelligence’s continued arrest of cadres and activists, while arrests of citizens continue without convincing justifications.
