Joint Operation of Colombian Forces Allow the Arrest of Several Social Leader Killers

On Thursday, Colombian authorities arrested 52 people for the murders of social leaders and peace signers and among those arrested are 14 members of the Central General Staff (EMC), the main dissidence of the FARC, and 13 of the criminal gang Clan del Golfo, Police sources reported Thursday.

Operation Themis, led by Colombian military forces, issued arrest warrants for members of the country’s main armed groups, allegedly the perpetrators and participants of a total of 57 attacks against community leaders.
They were captured, among others, Daniel Úsuga, member of the mobile column ‘Jaime Martínez’ of the EMC, responsible for five homicides during 2022, and Paola Leguizamo, alias ‘Mabel’, of the mobile column Carolina Ramírez of that dissident, responsible for six cases between 2029 and 2020.
Also arrested were José Castañeda, alias ‘Giraffe’, head of the Gonzalo Oquendo group of the Clan del Golfo, and Luis Murray, known as ‘Burro’, leader of the ‘Carretera’ group, also of that criminal gang.
The latter two were responsible for the murders of communal leader Juan Carlos Nieto Calvario in 2022 and peace signer Manuel Mena Viveros in 2021, respectively.
These people were detained in the departments of Cauca (southwest), Meta (center), Caquetá (south) and Chocó (northwest) between 20 and 31 March this year.
