Hamas Welcomes UN Security Council Resolution on Gaza

On Monday, the Palestinian Resistance Movement (Hamas) welcomed the content of the resolution whereby the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) demands a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the total withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces.

However, Hamas will reject any attempt to change the demographics or reduce the area of the Strip. It also emphasized the need to provide immediate humanitarian aid to the population. The Palestinian resistance also stated its willingness to cooperate with mediators to engage in indirect negotiations for the implementation of these principles, in line with the demands of the people.
Previously, by a majority of 14 votes, the UNSC adopted a draft resolution presented by the United States delegation to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Russia abstained from voting, considering that the U.S. text was “ambiguous” and there was no information about what Israel had actually accepted.
The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that Washington was committed to ensuring compliance with the resolution by the Zionist side. She also confirmed that her country wants to unify the West Bank and Gaza Strip under a single Palestinian authority.
The first stage of the U.S. proposal includes an immediate and complete ceasefire, a prisioners swap, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas and the return of civilians to their homes.
In a second stage, the permanent cessation of hostilities is foreseen in exchange for the release of the rest of the prisoners, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave.
Subsequently, in a third phase, the United States proposes a plan for the reconstruction of Gaza and the return of the remains of the deceased prisoners who are still in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli representative to the United Nations conditioned his government’s reaction to the UNSC mandate, arguing that the shooting would stop “if Hamas agrees to hand over weapons and prisoners.” He also mentioned that Israel has not changed its principles and will continue the war until it achieves its announced objectives.
