The IDF declared Al Mawasi a “safe area” after forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes, but on several occasions fired on the territory.

A raid there at the weekend killed 90 people and wounded some 300 in an operation allegedly targeting the head of Hamas’s military wing, Mohammed Deif.

In the town of Beit Lahia, another four fatalities and five injuries were reported, the official Wafa news agency said.

According to official figures, since the beginning of the current wave of violence on 7 October 2023, more than 28,700 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza and another 89,000 wounded.
