Gaza Authorities Warn Territory Is Heading for Famine

Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme, expressed concern that the same catastrophic levels of hunger previously recorded in the northern areas could soon be reached in the southern Gaza Strip.

The authorities of the Gaza Strip warned on Tuesday that the territory «is heading quickly towards a famine», in the middle of the blockade at the entrance of humanitarian aid, through a statement published in its account on Telegram.

Israel and the United States «insist on putting 2.4 million civilians in the hunger tunnel and perpetuating their policy of famine against children and the sick, preventing the entry of food and medicine in a dangerous and inhuman way», the press release declared.

In that sense, they demanded» an immediate and urgent international intervention to stop this crime».

They also pointed out that these actions «are part of their genocidal war» and “a tool to exert political pressure», which «has doubled the suffering in all the governorates of the Gaza Strip».

«Markets and shops suffer a drought of goods because they have been prevented from entering for 40 days after the total closure of all the crossings», denounced the Gaza authorities.

According to the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), more than 50,000 children in the Gaza Strip suffer from severe malnutrition due to continued restrictions on humanitarian aid.
