Chelsea Opens Investigation Into Enzo Fernandez’ Racist Song

Chelsea’s Argentinean international midfielder, Enzo Fernandez faces an investigation from his club after publishing a song containing racist language on his social media.

The video shows Fernandez and some Argentina teammates signing a song, which mocks from of the black players in the French national team after their success in the America Cup final against Colombia on Sunday.

The song prompted the French Football Federation to denounce the song as racist, while, Fernandez’s Chelsea team-mate, Wesley Fofana declared the song to be “uninhibited racism”.

Fernandez has since apologized, saying he was truly sorry, and insisting he stands “against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our America Cup celebrations.”

The text reads, “In a live broadcast on Enzo Fernandez’s Instagram, the Argentine players sang a ‘racist’ song.’ ‘They play for France but they come from Angola. Their mother is Nigerian. Their father is Cameroonian but their passport is French’.”

“I want to sincerely apologize for the video posted on Instagram. The song includes very offensive words and there are no excuses for those words… The video, that moment and those words do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry,” he said.

Nevertheless, Chelsea have confirmed in a statement that it has “instigated an internal disciplinary procedure,” adding “Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behavior completely unacceptable,” as well as saying they “acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology.”

There is a possibility that FIFA will also open an investigation, which could lead to an important sanction for the 23-year-old.
