Category 4 Hurricane Beryl Makes Landfall in Grenada

Currently, hurricane warnings are in effect for Barbados, St. Vincent & the Grenadine, and Tobago.

At 11:10 a.m. on Monday, the eye of Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island, in Grenada, with winds of 241 km/h, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

“Extremely dangerous eyewall of beryl moving over Carriacou island. Life-threatening winds and dangerous storm surge conditions are occurring,” the NHC pointed out.

U.S. meteorologists specified that hurricane warnings are in effect for Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadine, Grenada, and Tobago. At the moment, hurricane watches are in effect for Jamaica while tropical storm warmings are in effect for Martinique, Trinidad, and St. Lucia.

“Tropical storm watch is in effect for the south coast of Dominican Republic from Punta Palenque westward to the border with Haiti and the south coast of Haiti from the border with the Dominican Republic to Anse D’Hainault,” the NHC added.

According to meteorological conventions, a “Hurricane Warning” means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, while a “Hurricane Watch” means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area.

Due to the passage of Beryl, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) decided to postpone its 47th Regular Meeting of Heads of Government, which was to be held in Grenada from Wednesday to Friday.

“The community is willing to support Member States that are affected by this dangerous hurricane,” CARICOM pointed out, as reported by Reportes 365.
