Black Politician Suffers Racist Attack in Germany

On Thursday, Abimnwi Awemo, a German politician of Cameroonian origin, was the victim of a racist attack while she was putting up election posters for her party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), in the city of Cottbus.

“I have respect for people, not fear. I went into politics to work with people and to change things together. I am from Cottbus and will remain a Cottbus native who is committed to the people here,” Awemo said, as reported by DW.
“Awemo was insulted and attacked,” said Jan Redmann, president of the CDU in Brandenburg, the federal state that surrounds the city-state of Berlin and where Cottbus is located.
“This attack is further proof of the brutalization of some sectors of our society. We stand by Abimnwi. We will not let them depress us. This afternoon I am traveling to Cottbus to support her,” he added.
Brandenburg is one of three federal states that will hold regional elections on September 22, shortly after the elections scheduled in Saxony and Thuringia for the first day of that month.
In the states of Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg, the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) remains the favorite to win the elections.
According to the most recent voting intention polls in Brandenburg, the AfD would obtain up to 24 percent of the votes, followed by the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) with 19 percent, and the Christian Democratic Union with 18 percent.
